Limb Loss Definitions Nov'21 -
This list, assembled by the Amputee Coalition, provides definitions for the most common medical terms in use related to amputation, body parts, prosthetics, and organizations. This is a good resource for becoming familiar with these terms as new amputees.

Advanced concepts

Myoelectric limb Nov '21 -
“Myoelectric” is the term for electric properties of muscles. A myoelectric-controlled prosthesis is an externally powered artificial limb that you control with the electrical signals generated naturally by your own muscles. At this time, myoelectric-controlled prostheses are only available t o upper extremity amputees, as explained in this article by prosthesis maker OttoBock.

Osseointegration overview Nov '21 -
Osseointegration for amputees involves implanting a metal anchor directly to the bone of an amputated limb that extends out of the residual limb. A prosthesis is then attached to the metal extension (abutment). Learn more by reading this Amputee Coalition article.

The Amputee Coalition Nov '20 -
Chock full of useful information, some of which can easily be printed. See the tab "Limb Loss Resource Center."  You can also read their magazine "In Motion" online or subscribe to it for free. In addition, they have a guide entitled "First Step" that you can order. It has many useful articles in it. The bulk of the online resources are listed within the tab called Limb Loss Resource Center. Check out the section on Resources by Amputation Level. Limbs for Life Nov '20 -
Limbs for Life is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to providing fully-functional prosthetic care for individuals who cannot otherwise afford it and raising awareness of the challenges facing amputees. Some state Medicaid programs, including Texas, Oklahoma and Mississippi, DO NOT provide prosthetic limbs for adults. Limbs for Life accepts donated components to use to assist those who cannot otherwise obtain a prosthesis.

Steps of Faith Nov '20 -
Every amputee knows the importance of the right prosthetic fit and function. Unfortuanately, many amputees often don't have health insurance that covers prosthetic needs. Steps of Faith (which is not directly affiliated with any religious organization) can help. This is another organization that accepts donations of prothetic components. War Amps National Amputee Centre Nov '20 -
The War Amps site, operated by a Canadian charitable organization, is run by war amputees. There's plenty of useful information for amputees of all ages and their loved ones.

Wounded Warrior Project Nov '20 -
This charity and veterans service organization offers a variety of programs, services and events for wounded veterans of the military actions following September 11, 2001.

Amputee Coalition Annual Conference Nov '20 -
This annual event is held at a different location each year, usually in the summer months.

Chicago Abilities Expo Nov '20 -
Held in Schaumburg, IL (about 25 miles NW of Chicago,) this is a well-attended free event for people with disabilities, their families, seniors, veterans and healthcare professionals. Held in June, this annual three-day event opens your eyes to new technologies, new possibilities, new solutions and new opportunities to change your life.
